Coronet of a baron United Kingdom peerage creations 1801 to 2024: a list compiled by David Beamish

Home page

This site provides a list of United Kingdom peerage creations since 1801. It includes a chronological list of peerage creations, together with an alphabetical index. The full index contains hyperlinks to the corresponding entries in the chronological list. These pages are about 500 and 300 kilobytes respectively and so may take a while to load. So there are also versions of the list and index divided into four web pages. In the case of the index there are versions divided chronologically and alphabetically. The links in those indexes lead to the version of the list which is divided into four sections.

Please note that the original version of this list at http://website.lineone.net/~david.beamish/ is no longer being updated.

Additional lists show life peerages created under the Life Peerages Act 1958, other peerages created since 1958, and peerages conferred on women. In the case of this last list, it should be noted that peerages created before 1958 did not confer membership of the House of Lords on the original grantee.

Since the enactment of the House of Lords Act 1999 (11 November 1999) no hereditary peerage has entitled the holder to sit in the House of Lords.

A separate list shows details of special remainders. It includes all hereditary peerages which descend other than to "heirs male of the body lawfully begotten". Such peerages are shown in the chronological lists by a note "(special remainder)" linking to the relevant entry.

There is also a table showing numbers of peerage creations since 1880 by administration.

NEW In January 2021 a list of peerages of Ireland 1801–1898 was added. It may be reached via the "Other lists" drop-down list.

Each page has links to every other (in the case of the list and index pages, at the foot as well as at the head of the page).

In May 2011 a list of appointments of Lords of Appeal In Ordinary was added. In May 2015 lists were added of writs in acceleration and disclaimers and resignations.

In March 2020 a list of terminations of abeyances was added.

In March 2020, with a view to de-cluttering the page headings, the set of links to other pages was replaced by a one-line set of categories with drop-down links appearing when the cursor is hovered. Feedback on the operation of these links will be welcomed, as will suggestions for improving the content and presentation of the website.

A list of earlier peerage creations may be found in Peerage Creations 1649-1800 by J. C. Sainty first published by the Parliamentary Yearbook Trust in 1998 and reissued by Wiley-Blackwell in 2008 with the addition of a list of peerages of Ireland 1603-1898. A list of peerage creations from 1603 to 1649, also by J. C. Sainty, is online at www.history.ac.uk/publications/office/peerage.

In the chronological list, dates of creation (i.e. dates of letters patent) are shown against a colour-coded background identifying the administration under which the peerage was created. For details see the list of administrations. Colour-coding has yet to be added for peerages created prior to 1837. For the period 1837 to 1911 my attributions to administrations are taken from a doctoral thesis The creation of peerages in England 1837–1911 presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Yale University in 1934 by the late Ralph Everett Pumphrey and later microfilmed by University Microfilms, Inc., Ann Arbor, Michigan. (reference 6716593).
